The first talk explains how ILIAS goes beyond the traditional LMS model: its flexible architecture allows it to also function as a CMS, managing complex learning ecosystems within a single framework for content, users, and processes. Two cases demonstrate this concretely:

DIAMETER, a Horizon Europe project dedicated to additive manufacturing and the transition towards a sustainable production model. Here, ILIAS is not just the LMS for the consortium’s technical training: it is also the project’s institutional CMS, the single point for managing and sharing content, communication, and documentation across the different work packages, ensuring security, independence, and compliance with European transparency standards. The project’s website is also publicly indexed by search engines thanks to our own SEO plugin — a concrete way of applying digital sovereignty to the online visibility of content too, without depending on third-party tools.

Volt Academy, Volt Europa’s learning ecosystem, builds, on an ILIAS foundation, a shared learning environment across multiple European countries, while maintaining local autonomy and protecting users’ sensitive data — a second perspective on the same strategy: turning an open source LMS into a sovereign knowledge infrastructure.
