On September 9th and 10th we will be in Hamburg for the ILIAS Conference 2026<\/u><\/a>, a symbolically significant edition: the international community is returning to Helmut Schmidt University, the very place that hosted the first ILIAS conference 25 years ago. A return to its origins that celebrates the history of an open source platform that has become, over time, a pillar for the public sector, universities, and European e\u2011learning projects. <\/p>

Digital Sovereignty in Action: ILIAS as a Knowledge Hub for European Projects\n\n<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The first talk explains how ILIAS goes beyond the traditional LMS model: its flexible architecture allows it to also function as a CMS, managing complex learning ecosystems within a single framework for content, users, and processes. Two cases demonstrate this concretely: <\/p>

DIAMETER, a Horizon Europe project dedicated to additive manufacturing and the transition towards a sustainable production model. Here, ILIAS is not just the LMS for the consortium\u2019s technical training: it is also the project\u2019s institutional CMS, the single point for managing and sharing content, communication, and documentation across the different work packages, ensuring security, independence, and compliance with European transparency standards. The project\u2019s website<\/a><\/u><\/strong> is also publicly indexed by search engines thanks to our own SEO plugin \u2014 a concrete way of applying digital sovereignty to the online visibility of content too, without depending on third-party tools. <\/p>

Volt Academy, Volt Europa\u2019s learning ecosystem<\/strong>, builds, on an ILIAS foundation, a shared learning environment across multiple European countries, while maintaining local autonomy and protecting users\u2019 sensitive data \u2014 a second perspective on the same strategy: turning an open source LMS into a sovereign knowledge infrastructure. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The second talk shows how, in complex projects, a platform can run into difficulties even when the technical side works fine. Starting from the case of a fictional company, ACME, we present our consulting approach: a method that analyses editorial practices, stakeholder alignment, and organisational dynamics to improve the user experience. <\/p>

The framework we propose helps organisations interpret adoption patterns, support instructors and coordinators, prevent backlogs, ensure compliance and accessibility, and maintain operational continuity.<\/p>

The session highlights what it really means to operate ILIAS in complex institutional contexts: it\u2019s not about applying patches or fixing individual technical issues, but about understanding the organisational ecosystem that makes the platform truly governable.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
